HUDSON VALLEY RESIDENCE
The Hudson Valley Residence is the poster child for Dennis Wedlick's "good home." Located in Upper Nyack, NY on a bluff
overlooking the Hudson River, this large, warm house has character and expressiveness to spare - and, at 4,000 square feet,
ample space for the growing family that lives under its roof. The harmony of the finished product, however, belies the
difficulty of the design process; the clients expressed opposite preferences at nearly every turn, and it is a testament to
DWA's design team that they were able to create a home loved by husband and wife alike.
The greatest disparity was fundamental: she preferred the house to be perched, while he wanted it nestled. As a compromise,
DWA designed a home that is positioned up high, but feels very private despite its elevation. A variety of overhangs
supported by simple white columns foster a sense of insulation and provide a buffer from the surrounding world. The
interplay between sections of the house - in which some parts protrude and others recede - reinforces the sense of seclusion.
The "nesting" party also received his coveted haven: an art studio lofted above a barn-like side garage.
With a traditional New England aesthetic featuring simple lines and white wooden siding, and beautiful interior detailing on
such features as the staircase and the wainscoting, the Hudson Valley Residence exudes soul and serenity. More than any other
DWA project, it exemplifies the classic American home.
